Buderim Circuit Crew

Buderim Mountain State School (BMSS) was the first school to open on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Since that time in 1875, the school has gained a prestigious reputation as a centre of excellence. Almost 150 yeas later, the school offers a vast array of extra-curricular activities, support programs and special interest clubs to stay on top of emerging technologies, societal trends and emerging business needs. At the beginning of each semester, students are given the opportunity to enrol in the school’s Coding Club, the Buderim Circuit Crew. Lessons either happen before school or during lunch breaks throughout the year.

About The Circuit Crew

Within the Buderim Circuit Crew Club, students learn new skills coding robots (primarily Lego Spike robots), whilst working amongst like-minded students. Over the course of the semester, skills and confidence develop as does the students desire to learn more.

During each session the students learn to develop resilience and persistence, as their code often doesn’t work correctly on first attempt. This requires students to go back to tweak and debug their code. Successes are celebrated together and friendly competition takes place between both robots and their coders.

During the year, students test their skills and coding abilities by taking part in a range of coding competitions, including RoboRave. This is a major robotics event that takes place at the Sunshine Coast University. The BMSS Coding Club, the ‘Circuit Crew’ have had enormous success in competitions locally and nationally throughout 2023, in particular at RoboRave, where the team were crowned local champions. The Circuit Crew subsequently went on to win at the regional and state level, and are now preparing for the Asia Pacific Championships in July 2024.

Meet Us

The Circuit Crew is led by a team of passionate and dedicated class teachers, including Mr Craig Johnson, Ms Michelle Peall, Ms Kristie O’Keefe and Ms Lauren Croxton. We are also incredibly fortunate to have the support and assistance of School Principal, Mr Neil Jenkins, and P&C President, Ms Rachel O’Brien.

The team itself is comprised of a range of students from Years 4 to 6, many of which display significant skill and propensity for science, technology, engineering, coding and mathematical concepts both theoretically and practically. The future of coding appears to be very bright on the Sunshine Coast, with the interest and talent of Buderim youngsters evident and growing.

We are excited to support and further this trend with help from the wider community and local business, helping put Buderim and South-East Queensland well and truly on the map as a hub for coding and technology achievement and progress.
